24.11.23

 Year 5,

You were very busy this week. In maths, you have been identifying and creating equivalent fractions, and in English you began writing your chapter of the Labours of Herakles. In science, you planned and undertook an experiment testing the insulative properties of materials, and you considered the magnetism of materials too. In RE, you continued to learn about places of pilgrimage for Christians, and in design and technology you gathered and shared research on different types of bread; considering their differences and whether they are a flat or rising bread.

Next week, you will continue to write your narrative in English and continue to work with fractions in maths. Science and computing will involve you presenting and analysing the results of your experiment last week. PSHE will include you considering types of bullying and adding these to your snakes and ladders game.

Your project for this half term – The Wonders of Greece

As you know, this half term we are studying Ancient Greece in History. I would like you to study some of the areas of Ancient Greece that we will not have time to cover in detail. Your learning outcome could be a PowerPoint, a Word processed or handwritten project, a model or sculpture. This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 11th December, when you will begin share your learning with the class.

You could study:

  • Greek theatre
  • The Parthenon/ temples
  • The first Olympics
  • The everyday lives of Ancient Greeks
  • Greek astronomy
  • The Battle of Troy (and the Trojan horse)
  • The mapping and geography of Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Greek soldiers
  • Ancient Greek Myths

Reminders:

You have football on a Monday so please remember your second pair of trainers (otherwise a text will be sent to parents as a reminder for full kit)

-        Clubs - If you have been signed up, please ensure that you attend as numbers are limited and demand is high.

-        Reading – You have now all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.

-        Spellings – You have your pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog). Remember I am looking for improvement.

-        Sumdog - Please remember to use this to practise your maths. Your passwords are now in the back of your Reading Journal.

Any additional home learning provided is optional but must be handed in by Wednesday to be marked before the next is provided on the Friday. Remember, if your home learning is not named, it will not be marked.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

17.11.23

 Year 5,

This week you have worked really hard. In maths, you have identified cube numbers, and multiplied and divided with multiples of 10, 100 and 1000. In English, you have planned your own labour for Herakles, and have built your understanding of relative clauses. In computing, you logged into your emails, sent, read and returned emails to one another, and learnt how to upload and download attachments. Your history was then a research lesson on Ancient Greek gods and goddesses, where you emailed me your research. In PSHE, you focussed on anti-bullying week; considering what bullying is, and when 'banter' becomes bullying behaviour.

Next week, in maths, you will begin a new topic. In English, you will begin writing your labour, and in science you will plan an experiment based on your learning on insulators from this week. In design and technology, you will be gathering research on different types of bread and RE will focus on pilgrimage.

10.11.23 including (half termly project)

 Year 5,
It has been another busy week. In maths you have identified and worked with factors, prime numbers and square numbers. In English, you created beautiful poems inspired by Remembrance, and decorated these thoughtfully. You also had a grammar lesson on parenthesis. Science involved you learning features of different materials and then applying this to understanding the purposes of materials around the classroom. In history, you compared Athens to Sparta and found that they were very different places to be, and in PSHE you considered difficulties a refugee might face, and considered rights and responsibilities in school. Today you spent much of the days learning about and considering your Core Strengths. These were self esteem, resilience, and growth mindset. It was great to see you so invested in the learning and hopefully you have learnt a little more about yourselves in the process.

Next week , you will be continuing with a multiplication and division theme in maths (where we will cover cubed numbers, which is part of your Home Learning, on Monday), and you will be planning your own labour for Herakles in English. In science, you will focus on a particular property of some materials, and in history you will research the Ancient Greek belief system in more detail.

Below is your project for the half term. Please remember that I have given suggestions for topics and ways of presenting; you are not limited to these.
