24.2.23

 Year 5,

We have had quite a first week back! You began the week measuring, sawing and cutting to organise the pieces for your frame structures. You finished our history topic by either completing tasks or creating a double-page spread on the later years of the Vikings. In geography, you began exploring our new topic of ‘The United Kingdom’, thinking about where we are in the world and asking questions to further your knowledge. In maths you have been problem solving and in English you have been celebrating books through creating and sharing book reviews. You also had the exciting opportunity to participate in the K’NEX challenge on Tuesday and to begin growing potatoes as a part of science.

Well done to those of you who were successful in having your poems published! You have taken letters home for your parents and these contain all of the information and instructions on what to do next. Remember that there is no obligation to buy the books; being published is a huge achievement, well done!

Next week, you will be reviewing grammar and investigating features of instructions in English. In maths, you will be problem solving and then considering different metric measurements. You will be learning about why and how Jews celebrate Passover in RE, and will be working more on the play.

Half term project

This half term, your project is all about the production. You must learn your lines, cues and actions. You must learn the lyrics and dances to the songs. When we have looked at what we have, you may be asked to organise some of a costume (this will be ready soon).

Remember:

-    PE is on Monday, Thursday and Friday. You must have your kit in school

- You must have your script in school every day as we will have rehearsals at different times

-        Reading – please ensure that you read 5 times a week and record this in your Reading Journal. You MUST have your reading book and journal in school every day

-        Spellings – please practise putting spellings into sentences.

-        TimesTables Rockstars and SumDog – Please practise on these as it is crucial that you maintain your learning knowledge – these games help you to maintain what you have already learnt and maybe learn a little before we begin in class

Have a lovely weekend.

10.2.23

 Year 5,

You have, yet again, been very busy. This week you have calculated with fractions in maths, with a focus on multiplying them by whole numbers and solving word problems. In English, you wrote your persuasive letters as Earth to humans, about their impact on the environment. These were very persuasive and lots of you used the parenthesis and relative clauses we have been working on. History focused on the Viking timeline and in science you joined a STEM talk which was a debate over whether space or oceans were best to study. This week you have also recognised Safer Internet Day and created posters to guide adults on what you think should be taught about it, and you marked Children’s Mental Health week in assembly and this afternoon, where you thought about who you can speak to and who others might rely on.

Next week is half term. On the following week, we will begin our new English, maths and geography topics. You will have a workshop on Tuesday morning (more information on that when we return), and you will have a chance to share your projects with the class. I apologise for there not being time this week but as we discussed, you will have more time to share them by waiting for the first week back.

Next half term, you will be practising your play and so over half term you have the challenge of memorising your lines. Remember that this means learning your words, the expression needed, and the line that comes before. Doing this over half term means that when rehearsals begin you will be able to focus on the performance and acting! Below is a link to the songs so that you have a chance to practise some of these too.

3.2.23

 Year 5,

It has been another busy week. This week you have continued with your work on fractions, learning to add and subtract with fractions with different denominators, and with mixed numbers. You also applied this to problems, remembering which word meant which operation. In English, you have planned your persuasive letters so that you are ready to write them. PSHE considered jobs you would like to achieve and then you compared your dreams and goals to those of two children in Kenya. In science, you undertook an experiment to test the level of friction caused by different shoes and thought about the factors that would influence this. In design and technology, you designed your frame structures and considered the measurements needed for cutting your wood. It was also great to see those of you who auditioned. You worked extremely hard and performed with confidence. Well done to those of you who participated in the Sumdog competition

Next week, you will continue calculating with fractions, this time multiplying. You will write your persuasive letters as Earth and you will look at another force in science. In design and technology, you will be writing your measurements on the wooden pieces reading for sawing.

Your project for this half term – Artist Study

This half term I would like you to focus your project on a particular artist. Your learning outcome should include a written section and a creative section.

The written part could be a PowerPoint presentation, a Word processed or a handwritten project. Please ensure that this is your own work and not copied directly from somewhere else (remember our learning on copywrite).

The creative part could be a drawing, painting, model making or sculpture but must be inspired by the artist you have researched.

This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 6th February, when you will share your learning with the class.

You could study (but are not restricted to):

•           Stephen Wiltshire

•           Vincent Van Gogh

•           Barbara Hepworth

•           Charles Rennie Mackintosh

•           Freida Kahlo

Remember:
