25.11.22

 Year 5,

That has been quite a week! You have worked on written methods for addition and subtraction, including 5 digit numbers and those with decimals, and in English, you wrote your pieces inspired by The Errand. In science, you planned and then undertook an experiment to test the insulative properties of materials. History this week looked at the differences between Sparta and Athens some of you write brilliant adverts for these polis (even if you did mention that Spartans threw sick babies off cliffs!)  For design and technology, you did very important market research-  taste testing- of different types of bread. In RE today, you have thought about important journeys to you (thank you for your thoughtful and honest examples, even if these were hard to think about) and you then applied this to why Christians might go on pilgrimages.

Next week we will begin a new focus in English and will be moving on to written multiplication in maths. Science will look at a different property of materials, and RE will look at pilgrimages that are special to Jews. In history, you will be learning about Ancient Greek warfare, and in PSHE you will be recapping what racism is, and how it can be stopped.

Your project for this half term has now been set:

Your project for this half term – The Wonders of Greece

As you know, this half term we are studying Ancient Greece in History. I would like you to study some of the areas of Ancient Greece that we will not have time to cover in detail. Your learning outcome could be a PowerPoint, a Word processed or handwritten project, a model or sculpture. This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 12th December, when you will share your learning with the class.

You could study:

  • Greek theatre
  • The Parthenon/ temples
  • The first Olympics
  • The everyday lives of Ancient Greeks
  • Greek astronomy
  • The Battle of Troy (and the Trojan horse)
  • The mapping and geography of Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Greek soldiers
  • Ancient Greek Myths

 Reminders:

You have football on a Monday so please remember your second pair of trainers (otherwise a text will be sent to parents as a reminder for full kit)

-        Reading – You have all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.

- Everyone should now be in winter uniform which means wearing a shirt and tie.

-        Sumdog/Times Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your passwords are in the back of your Reading Journal.

Have a lovely weekend.

18.11.22

 Year 5,

I don’t know about you, but it feels to me like this week has flown by. This week you have planned creepy chapters in English and have considered mental addition and subtraction strategies, and practised written addition in maths. In science you were able to join a STEM talk about the design of artificial limbs and you learnt about the usefulness of insulation as a property with materials. In Spanish you have continued to learn how to tell the time and in history you considered the location of Ancient Greece and how this might impact the lives of the Ancient Greeks. In RE we learnt about the importance of Bar Mitzvah and Mat Mitzvah, comparing the two, and in design and technology you researched breads from around the world and found that there are many variations! This week has also been Anti-Bullying Week which began with ‘Odd Socks Day’ where we also joined a live lesson to inspire our learning. You then worked together to plan, script, film and produce your own Newsround-style videos. Thank you to those of you who also helped us mark Children in Need with your contributions to the charity.

Next week we have lots of learning to do. We will continue with ‘The Errand’ in English where you will be developing your writing skills to bring your plans together. In maths we will continue with written strategies for addition and subtraction.  Science next week will involve predicting and planning an experiment linked with your learning from this week. Hopefully we will also find the time to undertake your experiments (otherwise this will be done the following week). PSHE will continue to celebrate differences that we all have – something which you have been great at so far. In history, you will have the opportunity to learn about 2 of the Polis – Sparta and Athens, and this will help us to understand the meaning of democracy.

11.11.22

 Year 5,

This week you have shown great determination in your learning. It was lovely to see you working on developing your description and development of story for the reader in your English when writing about The Raft. In maths, you have developed your mental strategies using regrouping, rounding and recapping some divisibility rules. In science, you use scientific vocabulary to describe the properties of materials, considering why these properties make them useful, and then focussed this on identifying whether items were magnetic. In history, you have sequenced a giant timeline which has now been turned into a display in our classroom and you have put a version of this in your books. For the last couple of days, we have focused our writing on Remembrance and you have written and illustrated some beautiful and considerate poems linked to this.

Next week is anti-bullying week. It is an opportunity for us to remind ourselves about what bullying is and how to prevent it. This will begin with ‘Odd Socks Day’ on Monday where you can wear odd socks (but must wear normal school uniform other than the socks). We will also begin a new story to focus on in our writing and will be covering addition and subtraction strategies in maths. Our PSHE will be tied in with Anti-bullying week and our science will look at a particular property of some materials.

Spellings wc7.11.22

Below are your spellings for this week. Please practise those which you got wrong or were not confident with. These spellings are more about learning the rule for moving from singular to plural than the words themselves. Please practice doing this with a range of different words. Please put these into sentences as well as trying a spelling challenge as this will help you remember them.

Plural rules we are working on:
1. Most nouns end in 's'
2. nouns ending in a hissing/buzzing/ shushing sound end in 'es'
3. nouns ending in 'y' change the 'y' in to 'ies' (this is one we really need to work on)
4. many nouns ending in 'o' add 'es' (e.g. potatoes) but newer ones end in just 's' (e.g. radios)

4.11.22

 Year 5,

You have returned with a great eagerness to learn. This week you have considered effective use of verbs and expanded noun phrases, where to spend time describing and where not to, and tailoring your writing to evoke emotion in a reader. You have continued this through in to your art with your watercolour paintings to depict different emotions and show the skills which you rehearsed. Maths has developed strategies for mental calculations of multiplication and division. In science, you have considered how materials change state and what makes a solid, liquid or gas. You have finished Being Me in My World this week by considering the rights you have in school, and the responsibilities that come with this.

Next week we will be continuing with ‘The Raft’ in English but you will be in a new scenario. We will also dedicate a couple of lessons to work on Remembrance in recognition of Remembrance Day. Maths will involve some problem solving and we will practise some more rounding. In science, we will be considering the properties of different materials in a variety of ways. We will begin our history learning by placing it in the wider context of time using timelines. Our design and technology lesson will focus on seasonal produce and RE will be looking at a key celebration for Jewish children.

I will also be setting your project next Friday.

This half term’s learning is outlined below:

English

-       Reading ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’ and basing reading comprehension around this.

-       Writing Cinquains

-       Developing writing based on a text 'The Errand'

-       Recount – writing from the perspective of a character in our class reader

Maths

-       Using the four operations, problem solving

-       Mental and written strategies for the four operations

-       Fractions - identifying, ordering, comparing and calculating with fractions

Science – understanding the properties and changes of materials

Computing – Communication and collaboration online including use of email and collaborative sites. Word processing linked to other topics

History – Understanding Ancient Greece and its influence on today

Art and Design – Food technology - investigating, designing, making and evaluating a seasonal dish

RE – Understanding the celebrations and pilgrimage of Christianity and Judaism. Symbols within the contexts of Christianity and Judaism. The Christmas story - incarnation.

Spanish – Telling the time, what we have for breakfast, sharing likes and dislikes.

PSHE – Celebrating difference including an understanding of racism, types of bullying, preventing bullying, understanding similarities and differences across different cultures

-        Sumdog/Times Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your passwords are in the back of your Reading Journal.

Have a lovely weekend.
