Year 5,

You have finished your first half term of Year 5! Where has the time gone? This week you have worked on addition and subtraction, estimation and word problems in maths. In English, you have learnt about inspirational scientists who helped build NASA, and you have presented projects – focusing on your speaking and presentation skills. In science, you considered the phases of the moon and were entertained by the names given to these. You have also been creative when working on firework pictures. In the beginning of the week, you also worked hard to plan fieldwork for geography where you looked at recreation available in Potters Bar. You conducted great fieldwork with sketches, photographs and creating symbols for your maps. You also walked a rather long distance that morning! You participated in a STEM talk on Tuesday where you learned about the work of an ecologist, who provided a range of websites you could visit - I have included these below.

Getting started with wildlife monitoring | Natural History Museum (nhm.ac.uk)

home / RHS Campaign for School Gardening

You have also had the opportunity to share your amazing space projects – these have really blown me away – well done!

Next week is half term so have a lovely break and I look forward to seeing you in a week’s time.

13.10.23

 Year 5,

What a week! Firstly, well done for an incredible assembly – you did an amazing job of sharing your learning and you did it with clarity and enthusiasm. This week you have also written poems in English, and used formal written methods of addition and subtraction. In geography, you created a decorative information page on Innsbruck, and in Spanish you further developed your telling the time. In RE, you studied elements of a Synagogue and we had a discussion around historical persecution of Jews and the current situation in Israel and Gaza - initiated by yourselves; please remember that you are not to do your own research on this topic - it is one to discuss with your adults if you have questions. You also began learning about influential women as part of Black History Month.

Next week you will create double-page spreads about the women who helped build NASA as part of Black History Month. This will involve research, note taking, organising your facts and creating a well presented, information page. You will also continue with addition and subtraction in maths and will look at the moon phases in science. In Spanish you are moving on to your next topic and in art you will finish your pieces. Next Tuesday morning, we will be going for a walk around Potters Bar as part of our geography. We will be conducting fieldwork in order to compare our local area to Innsbruck. Your adults do not need to give extra permission as this is covered by the local area permission they have already completed.

Your project is due on Monday and over the week you will be sharing them with the class.

You have now been set your half term project on space.

Your project for this half term – Exploring Space

As you know, this half term we are studying space in Science. I would like you to study some of the areas of space that you have an interest in. Your learning outcome could be a PowerPoint, a Word processed or handwritten project, a model or sculpture. This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 16th October, when you will share your learning with the class.

You could study (but are not restricted to):

The moon landings

Could there be life on other planets?

Black holes, meteors and other space features

Constellations of stars

You could create (but are not restricted to):

-        A model of a planet

-        A game themed around space

-        A story based in space

-        A written project on space features

Reminders:

You have football on a Monday so please remember your second pair of trainers (otherwise a text will be sent to parents as a reminder for full kit)

Parent Consultations for our class are on Monday morning and Thursday afternoon.

Local fieldwork on Tuesday - bring a coat please.

Wear Red Day is on Friday - this is in association with Show Racism the Red Card.

-        Clubs have now begun. If you have been signed up, please ensure that you attend as numbers are limited and demand is high.

-        Reading – You have now all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.

-        Spellings – You have your pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog). Remember I am looking for improvement.

-        Sumdog - Please remember to use this to practise your maths. Your passwords are now in the back of your Reading Journal.

Any additional home learning provided is optional but must be handed in by Wednesday to be marked before the next is provided on the Friday.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Friday 6 October 2023

6.10.23

Year 5,

It has been yet another busy week. In English, you completed your non-chronological reports on creatures of Pandora, and then celebrated National Poetry Day by learning and performing a range of poems in groups. In maths, you rounded numbers up to 1 million and then refreshed your knowledge of mental strategies for addition and subtraction. You have also researched Innsbruck in the Alps in geography and considered your rights and responsibilities in PSHE. In Spanish, you have been telling the time and in science you considered the orbits of the moon and Earth and how this influences us.

Next week you will continue to learn strategies for addition and subtraction in maths, and will be writing some poems of your own in English. In science you will learn about the phases of the moon (if you’ve kept moon diaries, these will come in useful), and you will have time to rehearse the Year 5 assembly ready for Friday.

You have now been set your half term project on space.
