16.2.24

 Year 5,

What a half term! In this final week, you have written very persuasive letters in English, and then written fantastically detailed non-chronological reports on the Vikings in English / history. In maths, you multiplied with fractions, including mixed numbers. You held an artist gallery on Wednesday, where you shared your half term projects – to see such an incredible range of projects that had been completed to such a high standard was fantastic. You finished your class reader 'Who Let the Gods Out' and began reading the new one 'The Nowhere Emporium'. Today, you found out your parts in the play and we had a read through. You also received a letter explaining the parts of your outfit that may need specific sourcing.

Next week is half term. Have an amazing break and I look forward to seeing you refreshed and ready for another very busy (if rather short) half term! Your only home learning for this week is your regular reading, Sumdog and learning your lines for the show.

Best wishes,

Mrs Cresswell 😊

Friday 9 February 2024

9.2.24

 Year 5,

This week you have been completing your usual learning while being aware of Children’s Mental Health Week, also linking this to our learning on Core Strengths (resilience, self-esteem and growth mindset). You have had an assembly on the topic and considered ways to support your mental health and wellbeing, along with that of others. On Tuesday, you also learnt about Safer Internet Day and took part in a ‘Live Lesson’ with a few familiar faces discussing AI. In English, you have been planning and begun writing persuasive letters to Mrs Custis trying to tempt her to allow you to turn teachers into all sorts of things for a day. In maths, you completed your topic on multiplication and division, and began multiplying fractions. In computing, you created more complex vector images linked to your English, and today you spent much of your time creating Viking shields after designing them in a history lesson, where you learnt about their weapons and armour. Well done to those of your who auditioned today, we will be allocating parts next Friday and handing out scripts for you to learn your lines over half term.

Next week, in English, you will finish writing your persuasive letters and you will then complete some writing based on our workshop. In maths, you will be using maths in a design and technology lesson on Monday and then on Wednesday you will continue to multiply fractions. Next Tuesday, we have the Viking workshop, where you can come dressed as a Viking for the day and we will learn all about them. We will also have our 'Art gallery' session where you will have a chance to learn about the artists studied by your peers over this half term.

 Half Term Project

Your project for this half term – Artist Study

This half term I would like you to focus your project on a particular artist. Your learning outcome should include a written section and a creative section which will be shared in our 'class art gallery afternoon', where we will all move around and learn about each other's artists.

The written part could be a Word processed or a handwritten project but must be able to be shown without a screen. Please ensure that this is your own work and not copied directly from somewhere else (remember our learning on copywrite).

The creative part could be a drawing, painting, model or sculpture, but must be inspired by the artist you have researched. You do not have to use the same technique as the artist e.g. looking at a painter but creating a sculpture inspired by a piece of their work is fine.

This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 12th February, when you will share your learning with the class.

You could study (but are not restricted to):

•           Stephen Wiltshire

•           Vincent Van Gogh

•           Barbara Hepworth

•           Charles Rennie Mackintosh

•           Freida Kahlo

 Reminders:

Projects are due on Monday.

Tuesday is our Viking workshop, some outfit ideas were in the original email sent to parents. If you do not want to dress up, you can come in in school uniform.

Wednesday is open afternoon for parents to see your learning.

Thursday is the school disco (parents received an email).

Friday is non uniform day (parents received an email).

You must be wearing grey tights, not black - this is on the school website

You have football on a Monday so please remember your second pair of trainers (otherwise a text will be sent to parents as a reminder for full kit)

Your other PE day is now Thursday instead of Wednesday. You need full kit

-        Clubs –  If you have been signed up, please ensure that you attend as numbers are limited and demand is high.

-        Reading – You have all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.

-        Spellings – You have your pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog). Remember I am looking for improvement.

-        Sumdog - Please remember to use this to practise your maths. Your passwords are in the back of your Reading Journal.

Any additional home learning provided is optional but must be handed in by Wednesday to be marked before the next is provided on the Friday. Remember, if your home learning is not named, it will not be marked.

Have a lovely weekend everyone.

2.2.24

Year 5,

You have had another busy week. In English, you have written persuasive adverts to sell your potions. In maths, you applied your learning on multiplication to word problems and then began solving short division. In science, you planned, undertook and evaluated your experiments on air resistance. In design and technology, you tested the strengths of different structures and in PSHE you considered different jobs, their salaries, and what you would like to do as a job.

Next week, in English, you will be writing more formally but still based on your potions. In maths, you will continue to work with division. It is also Children’s Mental Health week, so we will be completing some learning themed around this. We will also be creating Viking shields for our workshop the following week so please remember to bring in cardboard to create these. Next Friday will be the auditions - you received the piece today.

Audition piece:

Typical! It seems like I fail at everything. I wanted to invent amazing things like Lady Lava’s Eggheads, but it always ends in disaster. I’ll never find the secret to success.

 Reminders:

Please bring in at least one large piece of cardboard by Tuesday so that we can create shields at some point in the week.

Auditions are on Friday.

As per the newsletter sent out last week, lip salves and balms, and hand cream are considered medications so must only be brought in to the office with a medical form for use.

You must be wearing grey tights, not black - this is on the school website
