Good afternoon Year 5,
We have come to the end of our penultimate full week before the
Christmas holidays. It has been a week crammed full of learning, generosity and
kindness. In English, you have written the first parts of your myths, which are
fantastic to read. In Maths, you have been looking at identifying and creating
equivalent fractions. You have researched about the daily lives of ancient
Greeks in preparation for next week’s learning and you have completed work in computing,
then sending it to me via email. You have begun your design and technology
topic for this term by reading about biscuits from different countries, have
undertaken some very important (and hopefully tasty) product testing, and you have
designed your own biscuits to suit the brief. Let’s not forget the lovely
Christmas lunch!
Next week, we will be continuing with the Christmas theme but also with
our usual routine. In English, you will be finishing and editing your myths.
Maths will be based around coordinates and we will aim to fit in a couple of
science experiments, which is based on the questions you created this week. In
History, you will use all the facts gathered in your teams to create double
page spreads on the lives of the ancient Greeks and in design and technology you
will be creating biscuits based on the brief of a biscuit suitable for children
at a celebration.
As I have said already, I am really impressed by your generosity with
your choice of donating money to a homeless charity instead of having a class
present. I will look to place the order for the roll mats, socks, hot
chocolate, wipes and cooking sauce this weekend, which hopefully means that
they will be in use by Christmas.
Remember that next Thursday afternoon is the class party (you can bring
your own change of clothes for that afternoon if you wish).
Sumdog has a new competition!! It is between schools in Hertfordshire so please try to play some of the 'tournament' games to get us up on the Leaderboard.
- Wednesday is swimming
- Reading – Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.
- Spellings – You will have your next pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog). Remember I am looking for improvement.
- Sumdog/Times Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your passwords are stuck in the back of your Reading Journal.
We are baking biscuits on Monday. If your adults have any questions, please ask them to email me.
Have a lovely weekend.
Miss H Huntley J
