Good afternoon Year 5,
We have begun December with a nod to Christmas today in music alongside you working very hard throughout the week. In Maths you have become more confident in short division with remainders and in computing you developed your Word and Excel skills when creating Andy Warhol inspired art and when inputting data to create graphs for Science. In English, you have begun to write your myth inspired by ‘The 12 labours of Herakles’ and I have been really impressed with what I have read so far. Your knowledge of Jewish festivals has expanded with studying the beginnings of Hanukkah and in history you have begun to understand some of the ancient Greek gods. You also collectively voted to give money, that would have gone on a small gift for yourselves, to charity - something I am very impressed by and so next week we will look through the wishlist of the charity with our budget and choose the items to buy for them.
Next week, in English, you will be continuing your myths; looking at
direct speech and writing about each of your labours. Maths focus on some
fraction work – identifying, comparing and working with them. In history, we
will be learning about the daily lives of Ancient Greeks and in science you
will plan an investigation based on the questions you had regarding soluble and
insoluble materials. We will also begin our design and technology focus for
this half term which is based on food. Next week will also be ‘Christmas Dinner
Day’ and ‘Christmas Jumper Day’ and your projects are due on the Friday.
Reminders:
- Wednesday is swimming
- Reading
– You have now been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them.
Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do
the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading
Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your
book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying
it in your journal.
- Spellings
– You will have your next pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these
throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog).
Remember I am looking for improvement.
- Sumdog/Times Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your passwords are stuck in the back of your Reading Journal.
Your Ancient Greece project is due next
Friday.
I hope you have a lovely weekend.
Miss H Huntley J
