Year 5,
I don’t know about you, but it feels to me like this week
has flown by. This week you have planned creepy chapters in English and have
considered mental addition and subtraction strategies, and practised written
addition in maths. In science you were able to join a STEM talk about the
design of artificial limbs and you learnt about the usefulness of insulation as
a property with materials. In Spanish you have continued to learn how to tell
the time and in history you considered the location of Ancient Greece and how
this might impact the lives of the Ancient Greeks. In RE we learnt about the
importance of Bar Mitzvah and Mat Mitzvah, comparing the two, and in design and
technology you researched breads from around the world and found that there are
many variations! This week has also been Anti-Bullying Week which began with ‘Odd
Socks Day’ where we also joined a live lesson to inspire our learning. You then
worked together to plan, script, film and produce your own Newsround-style
videos. Thank you to those of you who also helped us mark Children in Need with
your contributions to the charity.
Next week we have lots of learning to do. We will continue
with ‘The Errand’ in English where you will be developing your writing skills
to bring your plans together. In maths we will continue with written strategies
for addition and subtraction. Science
next week will involve predicting and planning an experiment linked with your
learning from this week. Hopefully we will also find the time to undertake your
experiments (otherwise this will be done the following week). PSHE will continue
to celebrate differences that we all have – something which you have been great
at so far. In history, you will have the opportunity to learn about 2 of the
Polis – Sparta and Athens, and this will help us to understand the meaning of
democracy.
Your project for this half term has now been set:
Your project for this half term – The
Wonders of Greece
As you know, this half term we are
studying Ancient Greece in History. I would like you to study some of the areas
of Ancient Greece that we will not have time to cover in detail. Your learning
outcome could be a PowerPoint, a Word processed or handwritten project, a model
or sculpture. This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the
weeks before the deadline of Monday 12th December, when you
will share your learning with the class.
You could study:
- Greek
theatre
- The
Parthenon/ temples
- The
first Olympics
- The
everyday lives of Ancient Greeks
- Greek
astronomy
- The
Battle of Troy (and the Trojan horse)
- The
mapping and geography of Ancient Greece
- Ancient
Greek soldiers
- Ancient
Greek Myths
Reminders:
You have football on a Monday so
please remember your second pair of trainers (otherwise a text will be sent to
parents as a reminder for full kit)
- Reading
– You have all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown
how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5
times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You
must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you
are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you
have not been enjoying it in your journal.
- Everyone should now be in winter
uniform which means wearing a shirt and tie.
- Sumdog/Times
Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your
passwords are in the back of your Reading Journal.
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs H Cresswell 😊
