9.12.22

 Year 5,

You have spent your time this week in many different ways. In English, you have focussed on writing and punctuating direct speech and have then planned the next part of Mr Wuffles. In Maths, you have worked hard to solve division calculations using the written method; giving answers with remainders as fractions and decimals. You have researched the ancient Greek gods in history and computing, and have developed your understanding of verbal bullying further in PSHE. Art has been spent revising and developing sketching and shading techniques using HB and 2B pencils for different effects, and you have begun to apply these to winter landscapes with reflections.

Next week we will be writing about the aliens’ escape from Mr Wuffles in English and will begin looking at fractions in maths. You will learn more about Hanukkah in RE and will be creating your double-page spreads on the ancient Greek gods in history. In art, you will have the opportunity to finish your landscapes. Next week you will also be given the time to budget in order to buy donations for the homeless charity that you chose to have the Christmas money spent on, and you will have a chance to rehearse in the church for the carol concert the following Monday. Alongside this, you will have time to share your Ancient Greek Projects as they are due on Monday.

Your project for this half term is due on Monday – The Wonders of Greece

As you know, this half term we are studying Ancient Greece in History. I would like you to study some of the areas of Ancient Greece that we will not have time to cover in detail. Your learning outcome could be a PowerPoint, a Word processed or handwritten project, a model or sculpture. This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of Monday 12th December, when you will share your learning with the class.

You could study:

  • Greek theatre
  • The Parthenon/ temples
  • The first Olympics
  • The everyday lives of Ancient Greeks
  • Greek astronomy
  • The Battle of Troy (and the Trojan horse)
  • The mapping and geography of Ancient Greece
  • Ancient Greek soldiers
  • Ancient Greek Myths

 Reminders:

-Reading – You have all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.

- Everyone should now be in winter uniform which means wearing a shirt and tie.

You must have a coat with you every day as it is getting colder and you may not be allowed outside without it.

-Sumdog/Times Tables Rockstars- Please remember to use these to practise your maths. Your passwords are in the back of your Reading Journal.

Have a lovely weekend.

Mrs H Cresswell  😊
