Year 5,
Well that was a
quick first week back! However, we have managed to squeeze a lot in. We have
finished our previous class text ‘The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane’, introduced
our new class text ‘The Nowhere Emporium’ and predicted what might happen. You
have also decided your final bread design considering seasonality and culture. You
have also written your narrative section based on Mr Wuffles in English, and
continued to work with fractions in maths. You have learnt about life in
Britain before the arrival of the Vikings in history and considered Gravity as
a force in science.
Next week, you
will be making your bread. You will be producing poems with a focus on
vocabulary choice for impact and will have an opportunity to perform poems in class. In maths, you will continue with fractions; comparing and converting
between improper fractions and mixed numbers. You will be creating Viking
shields (please remember your cardboard on Monday or Tuesday) and will continue
our PSHE topic of Dreams and Goals. As of next week, PE will be on Monday,
Thursday and Friday so please ensure you have your kit in school.
Over this half
term we will cover the following:
English
Persuasive letter (environmental focus) – note taking, research from a
range of sources, writing focusing on vocabulary choices, modal verbs, relative
clauses and varied sentence structures.
Poetry (environmental focus)– Performance with intonation and movement, writing
with specific vocabulary building for impact.
Spellings – pre-test, test and practise (please also practise at
home)
Handwriting – practise of specific formations and in presentation of
learning at pace

Adding and subtracting fractions
Problem solving using all four operations
Multiply fractions by whole numbers
Fraction problem solving
Measure – converting units of measure

Science
Forces; understanding the impact of gravity as a force; identify
the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between
moving surfaces; recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and
gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect; plan and undertake
experiments to explore the knowledge above.
Computing
Creating and publishing; using the internet and different tools
available, researching with refined searches, creating a webpage.
Art and D&T
Designing and creating frame structures using woodworking tools.
History
Studying the Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings, with a focus on Vikings. Including
our Viking workshop on Tuesday 24th January.

Half Term
Project
Your project
for this half term – Artist Study
This half term
I would like you to focus your project on a particular artist. Your learning
outcome should include a written section and a creative section.
The written
part could be a PowerPoint presentation, a Word processed or a handwritten
project. Please ensure that this is your own work and not copied directly from
somewhere else (remember our learning on copywrite).
The creative
part could be a drawing, painting, model making or sculpture but must be
inspired by the artist you have researched.
This should
demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks before the deadline of
Monday 6th February, when you will share your learning with the class.
You could study
(but are not restricted to):
• Stephen Wiltshire
• Vincent Van Gogh
• Barbara Hepworth
• Charles Rennie Mackintosh
• Freida Kahlo
Reminders:
-
PE
is now on Monday, Thursday and Friday.
-
Reading
– please ensure that you read 5 times a week and record this in your Reading
Journal. You MUST have your reading book and journal in school every day
-
Spellings
– please practise putting spellings into sentences.
-
TimesTables
Rockstars and Sumdog – Please practise on these as it is crucial that you
maintain your knowledge – these games help you to maintain what you have
already learnt and maybe learn a little before we begin in class
Have a lovely
weekend.
Miss Cresswell 😊
