Year 5,
You have had another varied week of learning where you have
worked hard. In English, you have planned and written instructions on how to
turn your teacher into a …… . In maths, you finished this round of fractions; subtracting mixed numbers and improper fractions. In science this week, you
focused on gravity and how it was discovered and is measured. Computing this
week was all about typing speed, word processing and embedding images – you typed
up your bread recipes. PSHE this week was all about considering priorities to
make you happy and then comparing these to others in the class and then those
in the wider world. On Tuesday, you did brilliantly when making bread – you created
your chosen bread type and added your chosen flavourings.
Half Term Project
Your project for this half term – Artist Study
This half term I would like you to focus your project on a particular
artist. Your learning outcome should include a written section and a creative
section which will be shared in our 'class art gallery afternoon', where we
will all move around and learn about each other's artists.
The written part could be a Word processed or a handwritten project but
must be able to be shown without a screen. Please ensure that this is your own
work and not copied directly from somewhere else (remember our learning on
copywrite).
The creative part could be a drawing, painting, model or sculpture, but
must be inspired by the artist you have researched. You do not have to use the
same technique as the artist e.g. looking at a painter but creating a sculpture
inspired by a piece of their work is fine.
This should demonstrate the research you have put in over the weeks
before the deadline of Monday 12th February, when you will share your learning
with the class.
You could study (but are not restricted to):
• Stephen
Wiltshire
• Vincent
Van Gogh
• Barbara
Hepworth
• Charles
Rennie Mackintosh
• Freida
Kahlo
Over this half term we will cover the following:
English
Instructions (bread, creative) - modal verbs, imperative verbs, semi-colon lists, relative clauses, fronted adverbials of time - cohesive devices, parenthesis
Persuasive advert and leaflet (creative focus) – note taking, formal and informal tone, writing focusing on vocabulary choices, modal verbs, relative clauses and varied sentence structures.
Poetry – Performance with intonation and movement, writing with specific vocabulary building for impact.
Spellings – pre-test, test and practise (please also practise at home)
Handwriting – practise of specific formations and in presentation of learning at pace
Reading - class reader 'Who let the Gods out', reading focus - inferential questions on a range of texts, scanning and skimming the text to respond to questions (please ensure your child reads 5 times a week at home as this has dropped recently)
Maths
Calculating with fractions, formal methods of multiplication and division, calculating fractions of amounts, decimals and percentages.
Science
Forces; understanding the impact of gravity as a force; identify the effects of air resistance, water resistance and friction, that act between moving surfaces; recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect; plan and undertake experiments to explore the knowledge above.
Computing
Creating and publishing; using the internet and different tools available, understanding what a vector image is, and creating them, researching with refined searches.
Art and D&T
Designing and creating frame structures using woodworking tools.
History
Studying the Anglo-Saxons vs Vikings, with a focus on Vikings. Including our Viking workshop on Tuesday 13th February.
RE
Considering symbolic ways of expressing meaning, exploring belonging to a community, individual commitment and religious leadership.
PSHE
Dreams and goals
Your other PE day is now Thursday instead of Wednesday. You need full kit
- Clubs – These have now resumed. If you have been signed up, please ensure that you attend as numbers are limited and demand is high.
- Reading – You have all got reading books and been given your Reading Journals and shown how to write in them. Please ensure that you read and record it at least 5 times a week. You can do the recording; it does not have to be your adult. You must complete a Reading Journal Activity before changing your book and if you are not enjoying your book you must read at least 40 pages and write why you have not been enjoying it in your journal.
- Spellings – You have your pre-test on Monday and are asked to practise these throughout the week ready for the test on Friday (they will be on the blog). Remember I am looking for improvement.
- Sumdog - Please remember to use this to practise your maths. Your passwords are now in the back of your Reading Journal.
Any additional home learning provided is optional but must be handed in by Wednesday to be marked before the next is provided on the Friday. Remember, if your home learning is not named, it will not be marked.
Have a lovely weekend everyone.
Mrs H Cresswell 😊
