Year 5,
You have had a busy first week back. In English, you have
recapped your understanding of grammar and reading comprehension. In maths, you
have been calculating the perimeter of rectangles, rectilinear shapes and
regular polygons, including calculating missing lengths. In PSHE, we discussed
the reasons people may begin smoking or drinking alcohol, talking about peer
pressure, and the impacts that these may have on individuals. In art, you drew adults
and children in proportion and in RE you considered the importance of prayer to
some people. This week you have also participated in a KNEX STEM challenge –
creating fantastic bulldozers, and have had your first session to become ‘mini
police’, which was led by members of Hertfordshire Constabulary. You have also
been observing changes in your potato plants.
Next week is cycling proficiency week for many of you. This
means that you will spend much of your time outside on your bikes. When you are
not doing this, you will be writing your chapter in English and calculating
area in maths. You will also have PE and hopefully time for drawing moving
figures in art.
Half term project – Masters of Maths
This half term, your project is to create a game for your classmates to
play which covers areas of maths that we have learnt about in class. This game could
be a quiz, or could be a board game (or a more creative idea if you have one).
You can focus on one topic or a range of maths which we have covered,
such as: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shape,
fractions, decimals, percentages, area, perimeter, translation and reflection.
Please ensure that you bring your game to school by Monday 20th
May as we will be playing them sometime that week.
Over the half term we will be covering a range of topics, outlined
below:

Remember:
- Lincolnsfields parent meeting at 2.30pm on Monday
- PE continues to be on Monday, Thursday and Friday
- You must be signed up to attend clubs, which start again
next week
- Reading – please ensure that you read 5 times a week and
record this in your Reading Journal. You MUST have your reading book and
journal in school every day
- Spellings – please practise putting spellings into
sentences as well as practising them.
- SumDog – Please practise on this as it is crucial that you
maintain your learning knowledge – these games help you to maintain what you
have already learnt and maybe learn a little before we begin in class
Have a lovely weekend.
Mrs Cresswell
